Porcelain Veneers

Do you have misaligned, discolored, chipped, or broken teeth? Does that make you feel self-conscious? Would you like to have your smile back? You can, with porcelain veneers from your dentist. They are a more cost-effective restorative treatment than crowns, because instead of covering the entire tooth, porcelain veneers simply cover the front of your teeth. They are easy to place, and they can actually alter the color, and even the length, shape and size of your teeth. Porcelain veneers bring many benefits.

The Procedure

Usually, having porcelain veneers created for your teeth will require two or three visits to Dr. Headley. First, you will come to see him for a consultation, at which time you may decide that you want some time to think about the procedure, or you may simply conclude that this is what you want to do if you are the right candidate. If it’s the latter, then Dr. Headley can take impressions and x-rays of your teeth on the first visit. It may also be necessary to scrape off a bit of your tooth enamel so that the veneers will fit properly and not feel overly large in your mouth. Once that is done, the impressions will be sent to a lab where a master ceramist will create your veneers. Usually that takes 1-2 weeks, and once they are ready, you will come back to have them fitted.

On your final appointment, Dr. Headley will place the veneers on your teeth to ensure that they are exactly the right color, and that they fit correctly. He may do a few final adjustments to the fit and the color, and then he will rough up your teeth a bit to ensure that they will hold properly. Then he will attach the veneers using a special cement; use a special light that activates chemicals in the bonding cement to ensure proper adhesion, and scrape off any excess cement. Finally, he will check your bite to make sure it is comfortable, and make any final adjustments that may be needed. The procedure is painless, but because of the removal of a tiny bit of your enamel (less than a millimeter), you may find that your teeth are a bit sensitive for a while. You can easily correct this by using a toothpaste that is formulated especially for sensitive teeth.

The Benefits

The wonderful thing about porcelain veneers is that they look just like natural teeth, and they also feel completely natural. You will never feel any discomfort, and unless you tell people that you have had veneers installed, they won’t know. Veneers also resist staining, and they are every bit as strong as your own teeth, so you don’t have to avoid the foods you love. As to care, just brush, floss, and see us for regular cleanings. The veneers will not decay, but you still have to look after the underlying teeth and also make sure that there is no bacterial buildup in your gums that could cause gingivitis.
