The Procedure

Usually, having porcelain veneers created for your teeth will require two or three visits to Dr. Headley. First, you will come to see him for a consultation, at which time you may decide that you want some time to think about the procedure, or you may simply conclude that this is what you want to do if you are the right candidate. If it’s the latter, then Dr. Headley can take impressions and x-rays of your teeth on the first visit. It may also be necessary to scrape off a bit of your tooth enamel so that the veneers will fit properly and not feel overly large in your mouth. Once that is done, the impressions will be sent to a lab where a master ceramist will create your veneers. Usually, that takes 1-2 weeks, and once they are ready, you will come back to have them fitted On your final appointment, Dr. Headley will place the veneers on your teeth to ensure that they are exactly the right color and that they fit correctly. He may do a few final adjustments to the fit and the color, and then he will rough up your teeth a bit to ensure that they will hold properly. Then he will attach the veneers using a special cement; use a special light that activates chemicals in the bonding cement to ensure proper adhesion, and scrape off any excess cement. Finally, he will check your bite to make sure it is comfortable, and make any final adjustments that may be needed. The procedure is painless, but because of the removal of a tiny bit of your enamel (less than a millimeter), you may find that your teeth are a bit sensitive for a while. You can easily correct this by using a toothpaste that is formulated especially for sensitive teeth.
