Who is a candidate for dentures?

If you have missing teeth, you have a number of options available to you, including dental implants, bridges, and dentures. Dentures are simply removable dental appliances that are created for the purpose of replacing missing teeth on the dental ridge. Almost anyone who has missing teeth can be a candidate for dentures.

Depending on the extent of your tooth loss, you could consider full or partial dentures. If your remaining teeth are in good shape, you may prefer a partial denture. Alternatively, if your teeth are in poor condition, you may elect to have them extracted and be fitted for a full denture.

The best candidate for dentures is the patient who has experienced the loss of many teeth, but whose gums and jawbone are strong enough to hold the dentures. Good candidates for dentures should also be realistic about what dentures will and will not achieve, and be willing to commit to caring for their dentures. This means taking them out and soaking them at night, and also caring for them with appropriate cleansers on a regular basis.

You may also be a candidate for dentures that are implant-supported. Implants are artificial roots made of titanium that are surgically placed in your gums and jawbone. Your suitability for this type of denture will depend on the density of your gums and jawbone.

One major advantage to modern dentures is that they fit very well, and will not slip or slide. On the other hand, they will never feel completely natural – only dental implants can truly give you back what you once had in terms of feel and function. When you come to see us at KC Smile in Overland Park, we will talk with you about your options, and help you to make the best decision. Whether you elect to go with dentures or another type of restorative dentistry treatment, you can be assured that with treatment, your dental health will improve and you will be able to smile confidently once again.
